Relate to Digital Storytelling Conference, Valencia
April 12th, 2012 by MarkRelate to Digital Storytelling provided the first opportunity to showcase initial findings from Extending Creative Practice. Mark presented a paper written jointly with Alison Rooke from CUCR describing the ambitions and the material coming through from the nearly completed evaluation. This was the first step in the journey to build on the evident success of the pilot and it was encouraging that a number of those present expressed an interest in working with us to take this work forward. Others were looking to develop their own projects with elderly people and the post presentation discussion threw up a number of interesting pointers, not least the contrasting conceptions of exactly what constitutes elderly across different societies. The unfortunate truth seems to be that although this simple fact varies, the elderly are consistently low users of the internet and Digital Storytelling can be one way to engage them. Copies of our paper can be downloaded from the site. This was also another moment to promote our own end of programme conference in Maribor on Friday 1st June.
It was great to catch up with Joe Lambert from the Center for Digital Storytelling who gave an inspiring key note and to meet new storytellers from across the globe – practitioners from countries as far away as Pakistan and New Zealand shared their stories at the conference. The agenda split between those projects using digital storytelling within an educational setting and others interested in pursuing directly social goals. Many projects overlapped and it was a welcome opportunity to explore different approaches to digital storytelling with like minded people. We all learn from each other, so coming together in this way is really important. Digital storytelling is a relatively new, dynamic practice. Bernard Robin’s opening address tackled this directly by moving beyond the notion of the digital story as a standalone entity to explore ways in which the methodology could be incorporated more directly into educational practice.
An excellent conference and thanks to Carmina and the hugely effective organisational team for pulling together such an impressive programme. Wonderful to visit Valencia, a fantastic city and the ideal host.

DigiTales visits the open-access IT venue ‘Camon’ in Spain
January 30th, 2010 by OutiWe were invited to talk about digital storytelling at the new IT suite in Camon in Alicante in October 2008. This is a new open-access venue where people can use the pcs and macs for free. Over two days we ran an illustrated seminar, with screenings of digital stories from different countries, followed by a ‘taster’ workshop and edit demo. The translator Bellen helped to run the session for a group of 8 people with games and exercises designed to develop storytelling skills and group participation.
Camon is a great potential venue to run a full DigiTales workshop in, with it’s modern equipment and helpful staff on hand to help out in using the editing programmes.
Living Together – Imagine Your Future Part II
January 30th, 2010 by OutiFollowing on from the workshop held in Athens in June, a second train the trainer workshop for the British Council’s Living Together project took place in Haifa, Israel in September 2008. The new delegates came from Israel, Armenia, Macedonia and Slovenia. One participant from Georgia (who was trained in Greece) was there to assist.
The workshop explored various digital storytelling methods. The team worked on an individual basis to create new photographs, including the use of stop frame animation. One film was about growing up in the communist regime and the relevance of this to his life now. Another was about wanting to work with Roma kids, wanting to capture their stories, that would otherwise disappear. There were a couple of family stories, a couple of political stories and a story about a lady determined not to leave her house despite the bombing around her during the Lebanon war 2006.
The issue of the brief was discussed, and ways in which these new facilitators could gently guide the stories without being too prescriptive eg. using specific exercises with guiding questions. The skill is to be able to spot potential stories from the answers the group comes up with, to then nurture those stories further without telling people what to say.

I would like to bring your attention to the first digitales that we have produced under Living Together Imagine Your Future. They are the result of the training trainer workshops and although not all deal with the theme of migration and minorities, they will, I hope, give you a taste of things to come.
